Nearly 200 owl species are found in almost every corner of the earth. Ancient and medieval cultures regarded owls with fear and suspicion, likely because of their secretive, nocturnal behavior, mysterious facial expressions, and in some species, an unholy screeching. Modern thinking and scientific research have dispelled the fears and superstitions, and today owls inspire awe and wonder at their amazing adaptations of sight and hearing.

All of these owls can be found in the Lower Columbia Basin area except the Northern Hawk Owl, which rarely ventures south of the Canadian border. My photo references for the paintings were taken by my husband Larry. The Barn Owl was painted from a photo by Tom Munson.
